Winning Weekend

Ok, you all might be tired of hearing this...but I just gotta tell someone! Lauren's team played an old nemesis last night (last year's assistant coach), and had their hands (feet) full! You sports fans know the feeling...every play, every kick, every move was intense. The other team had this super-tall girl (5' 6") that could score from 20 yards out, and she did repeatedly...right up until that last quarter. DOWN 3-2 going into the 4th....the Lightning would be tested.

Little Tatiana, whom I've gushed about before, the little forward that can handle the ball like someone of much greater years (she's barely 10), put the team on her small shoulders in that 4th quarter getting two immediate goals as the clock had barely started. Amazingly quick, she manuevered down the field at the opening kickoff and tied it. The very next series put the game away...(Here comes the really cool part)....it was a looping-laser-pin-point pass by Lauren Scheuber from her fullback position that hit Tatiana in full stride...all that you could see from there was the back of the net stretching out to stop her shot. The goalie never saw it. Needless to say the ol' wind came out of the sails of the other guys real fast. Still can't believe that comeback.

Thanks for letting me share this...am still Proud Papa Geoff!

Happy Halloween

Blue Lightning Remains Undefeated

Lauren takes a breather between quarters in last night's game.

Blue Lightning continued their tear through the Beach division winning again...this time it was ugly, 8-0. It was a cool October evening as the Lightning cracked the fall air with 3 goals at the outset. Not much of a game after that, coach rotated everyone around and rested the top guns as they play again this evening. More to come!

-------------------------------

On a separate note, we received a special package today in the mail. Yes, the infamous Soccer Professor, the Swiss Riegel himself sent Lauren a game ball from his coaching days. This is no ordinary ball, this is THE game ball used during the 2002-03 Turlock Tornado United Boys u-15 season. Lauren's mouth dropped open as she unwrapped the package. You are the myth, the legend, the soccer czar from on far.

A message from LAS (jr.)...
Dear cousin Bill, Thanks for the soccer ball. I can't wait to show my team. It will come in handy this season. We plan on winning the championshiop again! Love Lauren

That's is for now. Thanks again!

News 10, Coats for Kids

This is a request for support and help to keep a few people warm this winter.  Last year we were able to collect over 200 coats through the News 10 Coats for Kids program using Duarte Nursery as a drop station during poinsettia time.  Please check your closets for coats your kids or grandkids have out grown or no longer use.  Adult coats are needed as well.  If you have any that you no longer wear because they have gone out of style, won't fit anymore, or are "not my color" bring them to the nursery.  The Coats for Kids program does two things.............
first and utmost it keeps people warm during and winter, and secondly this is a way to clean out those closets that you've been wanting to do.  We will have a bin set up at the nursery starting the weekend before Thanksgiving and running to Christmas.  Coats need not be cleaned prior to dropping them at the nursery.  A number of Cleaning businesses have volunteered to clean the coats prior to distribution.

Let's see what we can do to help some of those in need have a warm holiday season. Thanks.

LAS - You did good

Way to go Lauren........the real riegel showed up at this game.  No chocolate bar, soap bar, crow bar, or sports bar.  This was the real thing.  Two big ones from, incidentally, my granddaughter.  Keep it up babe.

pumpkin

It was a rather clear and bright late fall day about this time of year, when Lavita or Lavata was walking home from school with a big smile that made her face glow with happiness. She had been thr recipiant of the left over Halloween pumpkin that was festivlly displayed in the class room. It was a friday afternoon and it was aproching time to milk the cows. She was taking a short cut through our yard on the way to her house, which was by Ray Deans house over by the cement ditch. As she walked through the yard , dad asked her what she was going to do with the pumpkin. With a some what southern drawl she replied, "I am gonna half it in two and make a puddin and a pi"
Don`t ask me why I remembered that but it has stuck with me for all these years and when every year at pumpkin time ,I think of ,It. Must be bringing me  back to my youthful years when things were simple and I was even simpler.
This is a good time of year to stuff a barley sack with hay and take it down to Crowslanding Rd., by where the welfare building is now. At that time there were a few clumps of Eucaliptis saplings whera large tree ha been cut down and all the shoots  grew up. This made for a great place to hide.  We put the sack of hay next to the road and sprinkeld some rolled barley arund it to make it look like it fell off a truck.  We had a string tied to the sack and covered it with dirt and ran it back to the bushes. When some one would come by  they would stop to pick up this sack of  rolled barley , we would pull the string and embaress the person that thought they had scored a free sack of feed.   Some laught an some got p.o ed. One time two little old ladies stopped and when we pulled the string, they screamed" ,It`s alive, there must be some cats in there". Another time, Bill Coling came by on his motor cycle . He was on to our tricks so when he came by on the way back he rode by and kicked the sack. No doubt he had pulled this trick a few times himself.  One time "Okie Whitmire tried this trick with a neww shinning hammer with a leather hand. He hide behind the hedge by his house. When Chris Jorgensen stopped to pick up the hammer and Okie pulled the stringChris was chasing the hammer and the strins got hooked up in the hedge, so chris grabbed the hammer and broke the string and left with the hammer.    Uncle Bill

Another victory for Blue Lightning

A close game today in Redondo Beach.

It was a battle for first place as Lauren's Blue Lightning won 4-2 to remain undefeated. Playing right wing Lauren's two goals kept pace with their opponent as the score was locked at two at half.

Back to sweeper in the second half Lauren kept the ball well away from the Lightning's goal the rest of the game. Little girl Lauren was a tired pup after this one...what a blast to watch. Asked how it felt to get two goals today, Lauren replied "Dad, you're not a news guy."

You learned me "sumthin"

Beel, you learned me that you are very protective of your stories.  Sorry if I offended you in anyway.  My only purpose was to see if I could get a rise out of you and, of course, make sure the younger generation got a true picture of what really took place at Fairview.  Your words came back like falling rain so I ran under that umbrella tree.  Speaking to the umbrella tree (scientific name: actinophylla) it appears this tree is an evergreen which the tree behind the backstop was.  I think it really was a Pepper tree but can't be sure.  However,  neither the Umbrella tree or the Pepper tree has a tap root.  Both of these trees have very greedy surface roots making it difficult if not impossible to garden or dig beneath.  I think maybe you now realize that, because in your last message the cave has moved from behind the backstop to "somewhat" behind the backstop.  Now, I hope you have learned "sumthin."

Oh yeah, were those Camels or Lucky Strikes that those kids were smoking down on the bridge during recess?  I bet they were rolling their own.

Keep writing...........I love this.

Expert With a Dictionary

What makes you think that swiss riegle is only a candy bar? It could be a sweet play in soccer ,or a bolt of lighting Play.Or it could be the name of a clever play in soccer ,as the staute of liberty play in football. Keep reading the dictionary and you will find that the subject changes about every other sentance. Confusing, Right?  This play was designed to confuse the other team. The next time you are in a soccer game, hand the the other team each a dictionary and have them read while you score on them .It will be the only score you ever mad in a soccer game!     Bill, the elder

cave contraversy

Thinking to striaghtenout those who have no memory, I will try to learn you sumthin! The cave was some what behind the back stop, because that is the only place we could dig it that the teacher couldn`t see us dig it . The Prestos lived across the road, but they were farming the peaches next to the school at the time ,beause they gave us hell for taking thier props. I also know about the orange tree because we also purposley kicked the so called soccer ball across the road so we could go after it and grabed a few oranges and threw thew across the road to the other kids. We also did the same with the chestnuts,Do you know that the umbarella tree has a tape root and very few branching roots? A bit of advise; You tell your stories the way you remember them and I`ll, to the best of my ability keep you on the right track.
While we are in the area of the Prestos, there was bridge across the irrigation ditch which was the smoking bridge. This was also the privilage bridge. A lot of the kids from the Grapes of Wrath groupe, would smoke on the school grounds, which was taboo. Controling the problem became so difficult the teachers gave into the kids and let them go off  the school grounds to smoke. They would all walk to the bridge every resess and smoke. These kids had quite a life.A lot of themlived in a tent with boards about four feet up and a tent roof. These  tents were about 12'x12' A family of five or six and three or four dogs were cohabitating.  This brings up a story about the dogs they brought to school. It weren`t nuthin to have four dogs in the in the class room complete with fleas. One day during class ,One of the dogs was scooting his bottom on the floor , pulling himself along with his front legs and his hind leg stuck under him. One of the Grapes of Wrath girls, yelled out "Look the dog is doing tricks" The damn dog had worms and the dog was trying to scratch them off his--- behind. This , it self was a lesson in every day life in a country school.     Uncle Bill

What would Grandpa have done?

Geoff, you asked what would Grandpa have done if he knew about the cave, fire, etc. at Fairview School.  Just stop and think a moment.  Where do you think these ideas came from.  That's right............you guessed it.

Dad, reporting from 1117 Petersburg Way

Beely, I don't think sooooooo.......

Yeah Beely, you're right there was a cave.  But.......not behind the backstop.  Closer to first base.  No way were you or anyone else going to dig a cave behind the backstop with that big tree nearly covering it.  Way too many roots..  If the entrance was on the Presto property the tunnel would have to go under Whitmore Road.  Not likely.  The peach orchard to the east of the school was not owned by the Prestos.  The Prestos were on the south side of Whitmore and had that big orange tree next to their driveway  just across the street from the backstop.  Many soccer balls were purposely kicked across the street so we had to go after it and pick up a few oranges at the same time.  Maybe it was a different time, but my recollection of the smoke episode in the cave was from cooking frog legs that had been caught down at the canal by someone on there way to school.  Also, I thought you might mention that your brother that introduced himself to Mudhen behind the pump house may have invited her to see the cave.  But you didn't.

Yeah Geoff, it's a wonder that any of us made it through school.

Taylor update

We went to see Taylor tonight.  She is up to 6 lbs now but still in the hospital.  She had to have a blood transfusion last week and is still having some sleep apnea when she eats.  She can't go home until she masters her breathing properly.  Other than that she is doing fine.  Tomorrow is Sarah's birthday.  The best present she could have would be to take Taylor home, but she will probably have to wait a little bit longer.

Happy Birthday Sarah.!!

John and I are leaving on Tuesday morning for a Cruise out of Key West Florida.  We are going with 9 couples from Vet. Service.  Hopefully, the hurricane season is finished.

Good luck Leo and Marge at your McHenry Mansion Table Setting Fund-Raiser!   We are sure it will be a great success.  Sorry we don't get to see the golf guys in their knickers.
Would the Gov. call you girly guys instead of golf guys?   He wouldn't dare!

See you later,   JRS & MES

Riegel (Bar of Chocolate)

Hey Bill (Nephew Bill, that is)

Just a few things to add to your Swiss Reigel definition!

The  German dictionary also has a few other definitions for the word Riegel - bar, bolt; bar, cake (of soap); bar (of chocolate).  Of course the last one is my favorite.  I think that the reason that your Reigel is so good on the Soccer field, because it's only as good as that Famous Swiss Chocolate Bar! !

We have alot of Soccer players in our family, all three of the Colemans, Megan and Colby Scheuber, and Kathryn Leahy! !   They are all quite good, and love the sport!

If you get all of these Scheuber Reigels on the Soccer field, you'd have a great team! !

Riegel Smart

Billy, thanks for the explanation. Will go over that with Lauren. That formation would have worked really well last year with Lauren's team. They had two sisters (coaches daughters, go figure) that were/are incredible. The older played sweeper, probably the best player in the league, her younger sister was center forward...quick as lightening with ball handling skills unmatched. The eldest moved up, Lauren now plays sweeper and is improving daily. This last game I was shocked at how confident she played. The Blue Lightning held a shaky 1-0 lead going into the last quarter, but their opponent had only two shots on goal...mainly due to that sweeper Lauren. She was everywhere. (Mike, Dad, Mom...can't wait for you to see the games over Thanksgiving!). A side note, the little forward mentioned above got loose for 4 goals in the fourth quarter as Lauren's team won 7-0. Still undeafeted, but not nearly as good as last years team.

Uncle Bill thanks for the catch on Garrett's bday. We updated the list!

Fantasy Football is going well. I picked up McNair right after his injury and am hoping for further improvements there. I've got Edgerrin James and Jamaal Lewis as RB's, a great backfield if I can weather the next few weeks while Lewis does time. Here's a question...should I keep the NY Giants or Philadelphia' defense. Both have been productive, our league gives higher points for sacks, the Giants are strong there. Toss up?

That's it for now...wow didja catch the Yankee / Sox game??

Geoff

PS Uncle Bill I really am amazed that you made it out of grade school alive....digging caves and tunnels and building fires at school. How come Grandpa never found out about that? What would he have done to you?

The Cave

Thinking to have some fun one day,we , the boys at Fairview school,Decided to dig a cave behind the back stop.We brought some shovels to school and comenced to dig. The teacher was kept away from the back stop for a couple of days while the digging was going on. Once we got the hole as deep and large enough, We stole the Presto families` peach tree props and some heaver boards, to build a roof over the cave, then put he dirt over the boards so the teacher couldn`t see what we had done. We then dug a tunnel to the other side of the school property line ,on the Presto side. We could crawl in and be comfortable.  One day it was very cold and the teacher Got to school late, so the doors were locked and the heat had not been turned on. We decided to take things in our own hands, so we built a fire in the cave to keep warm. Not thinkins the teacher would see the smoke. Well she did, and we got found out. She start yelling at us to get ou of the cave .  by this time the cave was full of smoke and we were all choking. When the guys start crawling out of the tunnel the smoke had no place to go so it filled up the cave.Every one was trying to get to fresh air. I being the smallest kept gettin pushed out of the way, so was the last one out. and I was really gasping for air when I finally got out, and had a head acke the rest of the day.  Needles to say, that was the end of the cave and the peach tree props were returned to the Prestos      Uncle Bill

Important birthdays in October

Thinking that all don`t know, I must inform you that a very important young man in my life was born on the 20th of this month just one year ago.He is the son of Bryan and Tammy Scheuber,an the little brother of the most beautiful young lady by the name of Teal. His name is Garrett. He isvery much loved by his Nonna, Papa Bill and auntie Sharon.  We at this time are wishing him a very happy Birthday! This young man is no doubt the most handsome and smartest little man we know. He has a background in wild west history. He lives in Wyoming, The Big Horn mountians are his back yard, and he rides horses with his daddy who is a real cowboy. When his daddy is breaking a colt in the round pen , he is right there to coach him. I have pictures to prove it! His sister also has won prizes in the rodeo and has appeared on the cover of the rodeo magazine. That is a little background. Now this is my little buddy,so any thing you may have to say about him , better be positive!
Garrett,  Nonna   , Papa Bill, Auntie Sharon, Wish you a very happy birthday, and we love you very much!         Papa Bill

What is Swissriegel?

So that you don't think it is just a made up name. Swissriegel is a style of play invented by Eric Rappan,  Swiss National Soccer Team Coach of the 1920 and 1930's. This will most certainly bore most Scheuber News readers except for Lauren and Mike and the Duarte boys who played or practice with me over the years. I used this system of play in the 1990's to win one outdoor soccer state championship and 3 indoor soccer state championships, but please understand that it takes talented players to win all those games and put up the mind blowing statistics that they did. I was fortunate to just sit back and let them play.
Anyway Lauren this is what it looks like:

                                   striker

leftwing                                                          rightwing

                          playmaker     swissriegel

                          centerback    centerback

leftmarkingback                                          rightmarkingback

                                   sweeper

                                 goalkeeper

The Swissriegel or Swissbolt as he is called, is your most skilled and smartest player and he joins the attack when he sees that the opponent is vulnerable. By having two centerbacks and two marking backs and sweeper, your defense never has less than 5 players back and ready to stop the ball.

Soccer lesson for the day.

lol (laughing out loud)

Brother Bill, your brother John was laughing out loud at your battle field story as I read it to him.  Seems he can't remember to set up this web site on his computer at work. One of these days we will see his comments hopefully.  He remembers your brothers referring to that girl named Mudhen and the Deaver boys but doesn't remember hearing this story before. He also was quite impressed at your story telling and use of language.  Keep the stories flowing.

Issac Duarte -- Modesto Bee Cover Boy!

We caught Issac's photo in the Bee today, too!   What a cutie!

He's got quite a reputation as a "Cover Boy", as this is his second venture into the Bee photographer's lens.  Jeff and I remember his photo debut, crawling on the tables at the Duarte Family Reunion!!

What great scrapbook memories!

Lori

battle field

Thinking to have some fun one day , We chose up sides to have a black walnut fight at school. The pumphouse at one end of the school yard and the back stop at the other end, made for good forts. Both sides filled a peach box full of black walnuts,[ with the green acid filled husk still on them]  Running out from behind the fort loaded with ahand full of nuts, we would throw them at who ever dared come out of the other end to fight back. The braver you were the closer you got to your chosen target. Well Marvin got too brave, and got blasted right in the eye with a fat green acid filled nut. The eye puffed up so bad with all that acid,he had to find medical aid from the teacher. That, of course, brought the war to an end, and messed up all the fun we were having.
By the way Ernie indicated to me that his first kiss behind the pump house was none other than "Mud Hen"! Maybe I should clear up how she got her name.  The Deaver boys went hunting one day at Sargeti`s pond. There were no ducks so they shot a mudhen, which is a srounge mud sucking filthy bird that resembles a suck with green feet.  On the way home they passed  this girls house, and gave it to her telling her it was a duck. She said they had it for dinner. From that time on she was named "Mud Hen". I don`t think any one rememmbers her real name. I saw her at the bowling alley about fifteen years ago, and she hasn`t gotten any prettier.  Tell me Ernie what did you really see in her tha others didn`t?  Did we miss something that you want to tell us about now that time has passed? I mean she was really Ugly!    Uncle Bill

Missing Legs

Oleo, I'm sorry you were disappointed that the Bee photo didn't show my legs.  That was done purposely.  On October 21 at the Table setting event there will be a special viewing prior to the luncheon.  As a special attraction on that day there will be the unveiling of those legs and argyle socks.  The general public will pay for the privilege of this experience along with the viewing of "The Golf Guys" table.  By the way, the October 21 viewing  and luncheon are sold out.  Obviously many others besides yourself are anxious to view said legs.  We will not disappoint our many faithful followers.  Thank you for your concern.

Hey Pius -

I don't have any worms in my olives.... the worms in your olives must have come from Anita!  Maybe, that's why your olives taste better than mine!

Another Scheuber in the News.

As many of you must know Mary Jane has been working diligently to protect her property out there on Faith Home Road by getting signatures, going to board meetings and just last Friday appearing on the local television station on Central Valley Report.    There she was in front of their home talking her heart out representing her neighbors in this battle against widening Faith Home Road which will take in some of their lovely front entrance and bring much unwanted traffic including many trucks through this country area.  As the camera was scaning their front entrance Uncle Ernie was seen walking across the yard in his Grandpa Sceuber bib overalls.

Good Luck to both of you in your endeavor to protect your once quiet country road.

Happy 18th Anniversary

It seems like yesterday that we all celebrated that unforgettable wedding.  Yes, it was the beginning of a tradition of Scheuber napkin hats.  Just a few days ago in Tucson one of our Durvet members from the Midwest was the first to don a napkin hat at our formal banquet and hailed a message to John to follow suit.  The linen supply company must KNOT think it is such fun untying the corners of those napkins.

Many more years of happiness to Lori and Jeff as they celebrate 18 years together!!!

18 Years? No way!

Lori, can't believe it's been 18 years and with Jeff yet.
Congratulations you two and best wishes for a few more 18's.

Uncle L

What a memory...

Thanks Lori for the walk down memory lane! Ah yes, the day we witnessed the birth of the customary Scheuber hats at weddings...I'll never forget it.

I'll also never forget just how green I was on the flight back to LA the day after. I flew American Eagle...we stopped at every farm from Modesto to Los Angeles, I'm sure! The wine tasted so much better at your wedding than it did on that ride home.

Congrats!

Geoff

It's Our Anniversary!!!

Jeff and I are celebrating our 18th anniversary and I thought I'd share a couple of memories that have passed through my mind today...

w My parents glowing as I married my "best friend" -- and he still is!!

w Grandpa Scheuber yodeling a song for us at the reception -- what a special treat!

w Uncle John's terrific candid photos, two of which even found their way into our professional album -- one of dad and I approaching the altar, with my clenched, white knuckles prominently in view; and the other of Jeff and I leaving the reception in a shower of birdseed.

w Cousins John, Tom and Mike Chiavetta getting in the "Dutch spirit" by wearing their pants inside out!

w Napkins flying high: four knots Scheubers, two knots Dykzeuls!

w And a couple of trend-setting cousins with their ties wrapped around their napkin hats -- looked like our middle-eastern family connection!!

w "Tequilla!!!" -- our "unofficial" first dance.

w The Swiss flag flying high on the aunts and uncles table.

w Steve in the middle of a circle of dancers, leading everyone in the Chicken Dance.

w Heidi monitoring the guest book in a beautiful blue dress she bought especially for our wedding.

w Uncle Bill making his way through our receiving line introducing himself to everyone, "Bill Scheuber, Uncle of the Bride".

What wonderful memories we have of this most happy day!  I'm thankful so many of our family on both sides were able to share in our joy -- a joy that I know we will treasure for a lifetime.

Lori

Thanks, Oleo and Beely

What a response, Oleo and Beely!  I'm somewhat surprised that anyone took time to respond or even have read the article in reference to the table setting,  Steve Collins and I took on this challenge to help promote the Mc Henry Mansion and to preserve the history of Modesto where we all grew up.  Thank you for your kind words and support.  We are only one of over forty tables that will be on view October 20th at St.Paul's Church (corner of Oakdale Road and Brigsmore Ave.).  The following day will feature a luncheon at these creatively designed tables which should be a fun experience.  Thank you, Oleo and Beely!

Beely, how I remember the buggy shed, the out houses behind the shed, and the pump house out in the right hand corner of the school ground at Fairview School.
However, can't remember the "first kisses" behind the pump house.  Do you know something that we don't?  Who was she? Yeah!  As Mom would have said....Hope she wasn't an Okie girl.

Yeah Beel, I can remember playing "Annie Over" over the buggy shed and I'm sure some won't believe kids hiding down in the holes of the outhouse so they wouldn't get caught.  As a matter of fact, I bet most of our kids would not even know the game of "Annie Over".

Beel, thanks for the memories that you keep bring up,  Also, if you are interested in a table setting display, I'm not sure that a crane and steel beams and welding rods as toothpicks would work to well in the space provided.  However, give some thought to a "Barn Theme" of some of your art work and remember, as Steve and I have, you can do this..........It's not only for the ladies.......

Really Tee ed off!

After being in Tuscon since last Wednesday, I sat down to enjoy my Sun morning catching up on the news.  Taking a break I called Sandi since she was here at our house on Sat. and left us a note.  After talking to her a few minutes she told me that when she was at the hospital visiting Taylor, Mike asked her if she saw UNCLE LEO in the newspaper.  Naturally I anticipated that I would finally get to see this table that I had heard about from MR. GOLF GUY.  Back to the newspapers I ran fingering through the pages and pages of news visualizing in my mind what I was about to see.  Getting totally frustrated and accusing John of misplacing some papers, I called my scratch golfer friend Marco Dusi thinking that he would have seen the article and save it for me.  Couldn't believe he had not seen the article!!! (Too busy playing golf)  Talking to Mike later, I was informed that it was probably Friday's paper.  Back to the papers again putting them all back together after I had all but trashed them, I suddendly noticed that there was no Friday paper. Complaining to John, he advised that I go to the Modesto Bee website.  I called my bee carrier instead. She promised me that she would go to the Bee warehouse and deliver a Friday paper here tomorrow.

Next it was time to catch up on the blog site.   Yea!  Another Beely story.  Never knew about them thar outhouses at Fairy Prairie View School and Wild Bill the cowboy shooting his endless bullets.  This story was so timely after touring Old Tuscon yesterday where hundreds of western movies were filmed from the 1930's to today where it is still used for many commercials, adds, tv and movies.

Glad to hear that the Erin's "Special Days" article will be coming soon.  Sounds like she is having some SPECIAL DAYS of her own.  You go girl!  What is a tri-city dance?  Does that mean three times as many boys to dance with that night?

Well, what do you know!!!   What comes up next but "It's all in the bee."   There is Uncle Leo in his golf get up.  Wow!! What a table!!  It's obvious The Golf Guys put in a lot of thought and effort in this project.  Congrats  Leo on a job well done.   I was only disappointed in one thing:   They failed to show your handsome legs in those knickers.

Thanks Geoff for putting in the bee site so we can all enjoy your dad's fame.  Now I can print this out before tomorrows belated paper arrives.

Out standing job

Yeeow , are you trying to promote a putting green at the Mc Henrey Mansion? Or are you challanging some compitition? What if I came in with a huge crane suspending a steel table and chairs made out of 14" I beams, and maybe some steel wall panels for the curtin around around the table for the table cloth. I could use welding rods for tooth picks.
Just kidding, you did a hell of a job!  BEELY

befor P.C.

Thinking back to the days when it was still leagle to play Dodge Ball in scholl, and you could take aim at the biggest "Okie" in the circle, I was reminded of the other great games we could play.  Cowboys and Indians.
First a little lay out of the playing field... When we first arrived at Fairviwe School. It was a two room school with an auditorium in the middle.  There was a buggy shed out back where the early settlers kept the horses and buggies that they came to school on. Off to the right at the back of the school yard was a pump house. I assume that was the place of many first kisses. Now behind the buggy shed there was an eligantly built, combination his and hers out house. This was a classy Out house compared to the run of the mill type family two holer, with two size holes, one for kids ,one for the larger people. This one had a seperation wall between the girls and boys, with a step up little landing; each side had three or four holes of diferent sizes, so when you went to the rest room , it was kind of a community affair.{ good way to meet new friends] I think this is where the phrase,[" community Relief"] got started.
Now that we have the stage set!  Every kid had his favorite gun or rifle, depending on what kid of stick you could find and how good your imagination was. One thing about these guns was they never ran out of bullets, no matter how many times you went "kuew, kuew ,kuew, or bang ,bang.
The out house and the pump house became forts,  The good thing about the out house was that you could climb down inside the holes and wait for some kid to some riding by on his stick horse, then you could pop up out othe hole and blaze away at him and yell you`re dead.  These out houses were suppose to be abanded, but occasinallythey were used to save time to run to the rest room at the school house.  Fun was had by all. It`s amazing what an imagination can do.

Sports Update

The A's and the Giants destroyed on the same day?!?!? It was a bit overwhelming. Funny thing is that the big news down here was "no one left the Dodger game Saturday in the bottom of the ninth, down 3-0..." Brilliant fans. Even more brilliant sports reporters. They are comparing it Bobby Thompson's famous homer and stating that Dodgers have finally avenged that fateful day. Uh no. I'll forget who Finley is tomorrow. Giants gave it away.

My only saving grace is that Laker camp opens tomorrow! We're going to the first pre-season game on the 12th against Seattle at the Pond. It's a whole new season!

Fantasy Football. Lost tonight finally. Wow its been a really poor sports weekend. I ended up dumping Green for Kurt Warner, it was about a wash this week. I needed Jamal Lewis to come up big tonight, as you know, he didn't. I drop to 3-1.

That's it for now.

Geoff

Oh...Mike, before you throw out your standard line that most Angels fans don't even know where the stadium is, I heard and interesting stat today. The Dodgers and Angels combined drew 7 million fans, more than any city ever supporting two teams. (San Fran & Oakland were included). That just means that the whole LA basin went to one game.

Lauren's team won on Friday and again on Sunday. They were short a player, so Lauren split time at center forward and sweeper. Little girl was dragging by Sunday evening. No goals, but a game saving clear at the end of Friday's game carried the Blue Lightning to victory. Sunday was a blowout.

St. Louis in 4.

Thanks for the congrats.

The Ted Peffermans have not been blogging since they misplaced the website.  So I have sent it to them.  Hopefully we will hear from them soon.

Glad to hear the James family have descended to California for a spell.  Tell them hello from the JRS family.  We are sure you are enjoying their visit.

To Lauren:   Keep on kicking!!!!!    Get some pointers from that retired coach that you are related to that is DEPRESSED IN TURLOCK.

Thanks to all for the congrats.     Oleomarge

Welcome aboard new cousinlet

Congratulations Ted and "girls".  Hey Oleomarge, surprised to learn that walking causes babies.  May have to go back and check some of my animal  husbandry books.  Anyway, hope all are fine and we look forward to meeting Callie.

As Geoff mentioned, the Bill James family are in California and should be arriving in Modesto sometime this afternoon.  Will be good to see him again now that his stint in Kosovo is over and he is home safe and sound.

Callie Marie Pefferman

Since Ben had yesterday  off from school He and I decided to take a trip to  Rocklin to spend the day with the Peffermans. After picking up Haley from school, Heidi, Ben, girls and I walked and some scootered to the park about 4 blocks away up hill.  On the way back I mentioned to Heidi that maybe this walking would  start her labor.

John and his accountant Bud were on their way back from Tahoe after attending an ESOP conference and arrived at Heidi's around 7:30pm.  Then Bud took off for Modesto in John's vehicle and an hour later John drove Ben and I home.

Seems as if the walking to and from the park sent little Callie Marie Pefferman on her way to join the rest of the clan.   She was born at 12:05 pm today.  (October 2)   She weighed in at 6lbs 14 oz.  Heidi and Callie are both doing fine.  We will be heading back to Rocklin.

Now we will be anticipating the arrival of the next Duarte baby.
