Scheubers? Duartes in the news AGAIN!!

Congrats to Teal for making her debut in the Elks Magazine!   Hoping to see that soon.Last night as I was surfing on the tv, I came across Jeff Duarte receiving  his trophy at the MAMA awards.  Congrats to Jeff!!   Also wanted to comment on the creative Christmas cards from Geoff & Venus, and Mike and Ashlee.  We knew that the feet would be included and also that mom and dad would want to show the rest of that adorable baby Kenzee.  What a cutie!!  Geoff & Venus, your card was a topic of conversation at WAS house at our macaroni feast. So clever!  Trying to determine the characters was somewhat of a challenge.  Some of us thought that Jim D. was in there but found out we were wrong when Oncle Leo set us straight.   olemarge

eldest generation

The elder Scheubers had a grand time last night enjoying the annual Grandma Scheuber feast with dishes prepared from GS recipes.  The main dish of course was Macaroni prepared by the one and only Oncle Bill.   Oncle John knew that Auntie Nini would not be there with the polenta so he ventured to purchase the ingredients and try his hand at making  it in the very same pot that GS used.  As his polenta was baking, wouldn't you know that Auntie Nini called to see how it was coming.  She said "mom would be proud of you."   We other aunts prepared the rest of the side dishes:   green salad, beets, applesauce and nut cookies for dessert. Auntie Fran set the lovely decorated table with a Swiss theme of course and she  provided the entertainment.  Might tell you about that some other time.   Ha!  Ha!  The evening was spent as usual with stories of life  growing up on the Scheuber Ranch.   Lots of laughs and great food!!    Many thanks to the WAS elders  for keeping this tradition going.   ole

Macaroni craving

Just heard that the eldest generation of Scheubers is having their postponed New Year’s Eve Swiss alpine macaroni dinner tomorrow night.  I am sooooo JEALOUS!

But, I am happy to report that I did hear a rumor awhile back that there is reported to be a cooking class held this June (on the eve of the Relay for Life) where Oncle Beely is going to show the rest of us how this delectable, traditional dish is prepared.  I can’t wait!  There might not be any left for the Relay though.  I will be sure to save 2 macaronis to send up to the heavens again for G&G Scheuber.  Maybe one to Shelly this time, too!

Old news

Am unable to find that Jeff Duarte picture but this popped up--old news, but old news is better than no news. This was in a San Diego newspaper. Quite creative writing and picturesque description of Durate Nursery in December.

HUGHSON, Calif. -- While cold winds whip across the fields and raindrops pelt the ground, rows and rows of bright red poinsettias sit undisturbed on scores of wooden benches in Jeff Duarte's greenhouse.

NICE SKETCH OF COUSIN/NEPHEW STEVE ---  Thanks to Fran for putting in Sandi's picture.  She thought her dear old mom did that.  I know there is a sketch like this of Jeff Duarte since I located that once, but have to go searching again.  Also there is a sketch of Uncle Bill's painting out there.   Olemarge

shelly still speaks

Ben's Aunt Kathy Hoover was here yesterday and was looking in Shelly's bible and came across a note that I had never seen.  It was dated Dec. 25th 1982.  Since it includes all of you in her thoughts about Christmas, I share this with you.

Life can be as beautiful as you make it.  Christmas is one time of year when I know I am definitely alive.  The carols I sing, the hugs & kisses I give and receive, the goodies I eat, the stories and memories I share with family & friends.  All of this make me aware of life... a life that is a precious gift.  Today I celebrate with millions of others the precious gift of life given to the Christ Child.  I thank God for bringing Jesus to humanity.  May I follow in his example and love and serve him in 1983 the year of our Lord.   olemarge

''THIS IS FUN'' (BUT YOU HAVE TO USE THE YEAR 2005)

YOUR AGE BY CHOCOLATE MATH

This is pretty neat.

DON'T CHEAT BY SCROLLING DOWN FIRST!
It takes less than a minute .
Work this out as you read ...
Be sure you don't read the bottom until you've worked it out!
This is not one of those waste of time things, it's fun.

1. First of all, pick the number of times a week that you would like to have chocolate
(more than once but less than 10)

2. Multiply this number by 2 (just to be bold)

3. Add 5

4. Multiply it by 50 -- I'll wait while you get the calculator

5. If you have already had your birthday this year add 1755 ....
If you haven't, add 1754.

6. Now subtract the four digit year that you were born.

You should have a three digit number

The first digit of this was your original number
(i.e., how many times you want to have chocolate each week).

The next two numbers are

YOUR AGE! (Oh YES, it is!!!!!)

THIS IS THE ONLY YEAR (2005) IT WILL EVER WORK, SO SPREAD IT AROUND WHILE IT LASTS.

(HOPE YOU HAD FUN )
God Bless ,Auntie Fran

correction

Correction:   Sorry, we had that milestone birthday last year.  Alzheimer is already taking over my brain.

Bits & Pieces

A special thank you to Leo and Marge who hosted this year's Christmas Eve party.  As usual the evening passed by so quickly--sure that is because we were all having such a great time enjoying the conversations and great food.  Jolly Old St. Nick made his usual visit to bring happiness and gifts to the eager little children awaiting his appearance. As it turned out all of the JRS grandchildren were present hoping to see some of the cousins they hadn't seen since last year.  No such luck, but they hit the jackpot in being able to meet their  darling new cousin McKenzee Margaret.

Uncle John had a milestone birthday this month. Now he joins Maryjane and I as we all qualify for medicare this year.

Received an interesting Christmas card from my friend Marianne from Oregon.  It was actually a card sent to her and she  forwarded it  on to me when she realized that the watercolor on the front of the card was of a woman painting  poinsettias on her easel in a nursery.  (check this spelling Leo)  When she looked at the card she immediately thought of Duarte Nursery.  She turned the card over and read the explanation of a group of women who get together each year at the Duarte Nursery to paint. Actually I saw Chella Gonsalves at the Almond Gift shop in Salida about 3 weeks ago and she had told me that she is in that group of women painters, but was unable to make it out there to paint this year.

So sorry that Fran was under the weather this New Year's Eve.  We are anxiously waiting for her good health to return. Not to be selfish, but we sure missed the usual celebration of us older folks at the Wm S. home. HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL.
