''CONGRATULATIONS''( TEAL )

RODEO RIDES AGAIN

Just east of the Bighorn Mountains in northern Wyoming, the city of Sheridan lies between two of this country’s most romantic and distinctive landscapes: the Rocky Mountains and the northern Great Plains. It is an area rich in history, rich in land, and rich in cattle. Out here, “cowboy” is a real occupation, and rodeo is not just a sport, but a way of life.

Small Hats, Big Hearts
That way of life often begins at a very early age. On a hot, blindingly beautiful weekend last August, boys and girls in cowboy hats and boots sat astride sturdy horses on the edge of two rodeo arenas, maneuvering their animals in a series of quick turns, full gallops, and abrupt stops. On the sidelines, a couple of 5-year-olds amused themselves by lassoing a few innocent trailer hitches. Slowly a river of calves snaked into view, accompanied by its very own dust cloud and a signature scent. The calves didn’t know what was about to happen, but the youngsters did. And they were ready.

Relationship to Bruder Klaus

Hi Lori, Geoff and other interested

There's a relationship between the Scheubers and the Family of Bruder
Klaus. A historian made up a whole book about the Scheuber Family
(that's the one your brilliant uncles should translate, I guess....)
and part of it is explained the blood line back to the *really* old
times. I will read it again when I find the time to.
I'm not sure though how much of the saint blood is still detectable ;-)

Bruder Klaus

Hi Lori! Here's what Magy(Barmettler)communicated to us regarding the Bruder Klaus story. It seems that BK was a bit older than his wife...he around 50 and she in her 30's. For some unexplained reason he decided to vacate his home(and family, he had several children--and here is where the stories differ). My understanding is that we're related to the wife...not one of the children, but who knows, it was a few years ago! Anyway, if you look in the pictures you see the house where he lived, then if you follow the path, it will take you to the place he retreated to...all told about 1/2 mile down the hill. He apparently stayed there for his remaining 20 years. Not sure why, but it seems he was serving so sort of self assigned penance. The story goes that he never ate, only drank...and plenty of it! The family visited apparently, but he never went back home. The pictures of the old room and bench is where he actually lived...using only the bench to sleep on a rock as his pillow. You can see where he had a small window where he would kneel and pray as he gazed down into a small chapel. The story goes that folks from all over would come to visit and seek Bruder Klaus' sound advice and even to the extent that he might even have the ability to grant wishes. Inside the door of this small room was a wall full of letters and plaques in thanks to Bruder Klaus for helping various folks through there time of need. Some were dated rather recently, others 100's of years old. These seem to coincide with the story you shared as well.

There was another Chapel located about 200 yards from this...habitated by another wouldbe priest or monk. They communicated but stayed in separate places. The little valley was such a serene place, quiet and peaceful, a very different feeling than other churches we visited.

Now, in the front of the Scheuber Family book there is this whole story as well as the same pictures of Bruder Klaus statue. If only one of our brilliant uncles would translate that story...we could know for sure!

We felt fortunate to be there...an amazing day.

Thanks for the Memories!

Geoff,

Thank you for sharing your photos with us.  I love seeing pictures of the Rotzberg, the Hubel, the special window, Lucerne and relatives ... I enjoyed the ones of you and Venus, too!  Hopefully, in the not-too-distant future, I'll be sharing those same scenes with my family.  I did promise I'd be back and bring my "shotzli" some 21 years ago ... ouch!

I've never seen Bruder Klaus' home, chapel, etc. so your photos brought to mind a conversation Dad and I had about him.  As I recall, Bruder Klaus is known as St. Niklaus von Flue of Switzerland.  Dad says we are related through the marriage of one of his children to a Scheuber back in the 1400's.  What else can you share?  I'd love to know if we truly have a little saint blood in our ancestry!

Hope your whole trip was fantastic!  Hello to the girls!

Lots of love,
Lori

G & V Trip

Sorry for the confusing messages regarding our sudden pictures in Switzerland. Guess I should explain a bit. Through Xerox, Venus and I went on a recognition trip to Dublin, Ireland...so we took a side trip via Swtizerland beforehand! We were there Monday - Thursday, of last week, then on to Dublin til this past Tuesday. Tons to share with you all, I'll bring pictures to the Relay. We learned that Uncle Ernie and Auntie Mary Jane would soon be there too...I told Kuno about Scheuber News and now we can keep up with our family everywhere. We adopted the "International" title, but I open to other suggestions.

See you in June!

Geoff

Recognize these guys?

International Travel News

Hi Everyone!

Since our news moniker now touts an "International" flavor, I thought I should report that mom and dad (Uncle Ernie and Auntie Mary Jane) are now in Europe for the month.  They left last Saturday and flew into Frankfurt where they joined in on a two-week travel agents' tour of Germany, Poland, Hungary, Austria and Czechoslovakia.  Upon their return to Germany they were to be visiting with Alex and Vanessa Bircher for one night before traveling on down into Switzerland for a two-week stay in Stans.  During their time there, they will be attending a 60th birthday party for both Leo and Elizabeth Bircher.  Needless to say, they've been very excited about this trip!

I'll keep you posted with any news!  Don't count on any pictures though, as they just learned how to view their photos on the monitor (which honestly is more than I know how to do)!

Lots of love,
Lori

I'm soooo jealous!

It’s great to see the photos of Geoff & Venus (& Kuno) in Switzerland.  I so wish I were there, too!  Can’t believe it has been almost 6 years since my last trip there with my Dad.  I’m definitely overdue for another visit.

Congrats to Aja!  If you ever live near a Velocity Sports Performance, you would definitely be a great addition to the clientele.  Sounds like you’re the kind of athlete we love to have at our facility.  Keep us posted on your successes!  Sounds like there are many!

Update on Relay for Life donations, my friends are kindly pitching in to support the cause.  I’ve collected $475 for our team so far.  It would be great to see the Scheuber/Duarte/Chiavetta/Coleman/Leahy/Pefferman/Hoover/Joy (did I get them all?) families on June 24 (or the wee hours of June 25) at Johansen High School track.  If I get my way, there will be Swiss macaronis!

Sandi
