Turlock Junior Miss Program

Hello Everyone,

You might be interested to know that Anne is participating in the Turlock Junior Miss Scholarship Program this Saturday, February 2nd at 7:00 p.m. at the Turlock Community Auditorium. She's a bit nervous (and excited) for the big night, as are we! This year, 22 young ladies are in the program which features a 10-minute fitness routine, talent and self-expression categories. Prior to the evening the girls are interviewed and have their academic records and community service activities reviewed. At the end of the evening, scholarship awards are given in each of these six categories.

Anne has been practicing for the evening's performance for the past month and has worked with Vovo on her piano piece, which is Hayden's Sonata in D Major, since last summer. Keep a good thought for Anne and say a prayer she does her best!

Lots of love,
Lori

Misc,

      Congratulations Annie

Wow Anne!!  Great pictures of you in the Modesto Bee.  Congratulations again.  Being a retired teacher, I know that those books were greatly appreciated.  Sandi, Ben and I purchase books throughout the year from various places for Shelly's Memorial Library at Stroud School.  The librarian gets excited every time we come in.  We have great fun picking out the books that we think the children would love to read.  Ben also enjoys going back to his elementary school and if lucky is able to talk to some of his former teachers.

Information on Amelia Varni. Yes, she is Jean's granddaughter.   She is Tony Varni's daughter.  She is quite an actress.  We saw her in the play Annie up in Sonora a few years ago.  Fabulous voice also!

Building a guitar

Thanks to Uncle Leo, the master craftsman for assisting  Benjamin in his school project.  Grandpa John and Uncle Leo spent several hours with Ben to help build a fine looking guitar. For once, Grandma Marge didn't have to be involved.  Thanks to Grandpa John and Uncle Leo.  from Grandma Marge.

Congratulations Anne !

We are extremely proud of you and your sincere efforts in helping people and fulfilling the needs of others.  You have grown up to be a BEAUTIFUL, SENSITIVE young lady who not only cares dearly for others, but always puts others first.  I know that God will continue to BlessYou with the wisdom of making wise choices throughout your life and in always lending a helping hand.

We love you Anne -

The Turlock Journal | Local teen collects books for community agency

Turlock News
Hello Everyone,
I thought I send along a bit of news from our family. Anne laughed at the lead in sentence, as she graduated from SHS a few years ago! We're sure proud of her efforts and wanted you all to know!
Lots of love,

Edelweiss---Bless my homeland forever

Edelweiss

Edelweiss is a European mountain flower. The Edelweiss came from German edel (meaning noble) and weiß (meaning white). The botanical name for this plant is Leontopodium in Greek called leon (means lion) podion (meaning paw). The flower looks almost like a Lions paw.
The flower's stalks grow to a size of 3-40 cm. It is found generally at altitudes from 1700 meters to 2700 meters. it is well adapted to climatic extremes. Due to its deep fibrous roots and the felt like covering of its leaves get protection from drought, ravages of winds and the potentially damaging sunshine.
Due to the covering of white hairs on the flower looks woolly white. In the center of the flower it contains 5 to 10 yellow flower heads of size 5cm, with a medium-sized leaflet to form a start structure. It blooms between July and September. It is unequally distributed and prefers rocky limestone places at 2000-2900 m altitude. It is not toxic, but has been used traditionally in folk medicine as a remedy against abdominal and respiratory diseases.
This plant is protected in some countries like Bulgaria, Switzerland, Italy, Germany, Slovakia, Slovenia, Austria and Romania.

Many of you can recall Grandpa Scheuber singing this song with such vigor and pride. John and I took Shelly to see her first movie when she was 5 years old.  It was The Sound of Music. It became her all time favorite movie as she watched it over and over again over the years.  Of course a highlight of the movie for many is when the Captain picks up his guitar and sings Eidleweiss as he knows that he is going to leave his homeland.

New Year's Eve Dinner

      A delicious Swiss "Aelpler Macaroni"

Many thanks to Uncle Bill and Auntie Fran for having the elders over for their traditional New Year's Eve dinner where all contribute a dish made from a Grandma Bertha Scheuber recipe. We were all sad that Uncle Bill was not feeling well and spent most of the night in his recliner.  His macaroni was to die for as usual. Auntie Fran must have been exhausted waiting on all of us.  We all had a great time!!!
