remodeling of SOS

Around 1964 my uncles (two men on the right - Alvin and Glenn Olsen) remodeled the SOS club.  Here they are going over the plans- an article with this picture appeared in the Modesto Bee. Just talked to my Uncle Alvin who is 85 yrs old now- the only uncle that I have left and he filled me in out the greatness of Tom Mellis.  He said Tom Mellis was not an athlete himself but kept up on all the great athletes and promoted sports with his enthusiasm and his charity works. So fitting that they have a scholorship in his name.
So glad that Anne received this award.    Marge

More Congratulations to Anne

Congratulations Anne on your scholorship!

I must admit, I did not know what the Tom Mellis award was all about.  Had to google to find out.  This is what I found and was quite surprised for I should have known.  "One of the founders of the SOS club. This is what I found on google.

In 1957, eight men, led by Tom Mellis, banded together with the idea of forming a men's sport club to aid the California Relays, which was experiencing some financial difficulty. As a start, each of the men dropped $10 in the treasury of the club. This rescue team consisted of our Club's "Original Eight" including Tom Mellis, Tom Moore, Dick Willey, Stan Pavko, Hal Spicer, Henry Zipser, Frank Salas and Floyd Benson. These eight developed a membership expansion plan that each one was to bring one friend to the next meeting, those 16 were to do the same for the next, continuing on a progressive basis. It worked, and by October, 1957, there were 132 names on the roster, an outstanding jump toward their goal of a membership which they were going to limit at 500 members.

In the interim, the relays situation had brightened and assistance was no longer necessary. The men who had formed the new group became the Sportsmen of Stanislaus and turned their energies toward the establishment of a men's athletic club.
Modestans refer to it as The SOS Club!

Congratulations Anne Coleman !!!!!!!

TOM MELLIS — The scholarship honoree was Turlock High's Anne Coleman, who received a $2,500 grant.  From ---Great Auntie Fran & Great Uncle Bill.

60 seconds with Aja Scheuber

Sunday, Mar. 22, 2009

What's an athlete do when she uses up her eligibility in one sport?
Aja Scheuber, the cleanup hitter for the Bulldogs softball team in 2008, is trying her hand at the school's newest sport -- lacrosse.
Scheuber is a 5-foot-6 midfielder on a very green Bulldogs team that is 0-5 and has been outscored 94-5 in its debut season. No surprise that Scheuber has one of those goals. She's a natural.
As the Fresno State softball team's designated player -- meaning she hit but didn't play a position -- her big bat produced a .342 average with five homers and 48 RBIs to help the Bulldogs reach the NCAA Tournament for a record 27th straight time.
The Turlock native was an all-state player at Merced College in 2006 before putting on a Bulldogs uniform.
The Bee caught up with Scheuber during the lacrosse team's 18-day hiatus between games.
Question: Describe your first goal. What it felt like.
Answer: It was similar to hitting my first home run. I knew it was going to come, but didn't know when. I intercepted a pass, switched the ball from my right to left hand and shot upper left corner. Very cool.
You played on two NCAA teams in softball. How are you handling the losing?
Right now it's not about winning and losing. We're a first-year program that's all about building the foundation for years to come.
What did you take from softball that helped in lacrosse?
Probably taking groundballs. You run to the ball with the stick in your hand like with a glove. And the throwing part and hand-eye coordination.
Which sport is harder to play?
I'd say lacrosse. I played softball all my life and lacrosse only eight months. It's different; quicker and a lot more running.
Where you familiar with lacrosse when it was first added to the athletic program?
Never played it at all. Oh, maybe once at recess in fourth grade. I knew the basics.
Why did you choose to play lacrosse?
It's new and exciting and took me out of my comfort zone. Every day I learn something different. It's also the experience of being a part of history on this first lacrosse team.
Are you on an athletic scholarship?
I'm not quite sure. On a partial scholarship, but I don't know how that works. I only have this year of eligibility left, though.
Can this team win a game this season?
I think we have the potential to win. ... One thing is, we won't give up for a minute. You're taking a lot of long road trips? At least you're piling up the frequent flyer mileage.
Yeah, definitely. I'm used to flying and the travel. But it's neat going East and seeing that level and how the sport is really played by the powerhouses. We'll see first-hand what we are aspiring to be.

Fun in Florida

John and I just returned from a week in Florida.  First to a Reliable (they really are) convention in Orlanda.  We went one day early so that we could finally see Epcot Center after many years of hearing praises.  We loved it.  The Reliable group kept the spouses busy with a boat ride in nearby lakes and canals viewing the beautiful homes along the water, the numerous birds(pelicans, cormorants, ospreys, ducks etc) the trees indigenous to the area draped in spanish moss, and beautiful blooming flowers.  Lunch at a gourmet French restaurant, shopping and wine tasting where we found many Calif. wines of course.  Nightly dinners at the hotel with dancing to a tropical music group by the pool.

Leaving Orlando on Saturday afternoon we rented a car a drove to Ft. Meyers where we spent the next 4 days with our friends from Indiana -sunning, golfing, dining out and beach combing. (best shell collecting ever!)  They took us to Marco Island where we met our other Indiana friends. (Michael's basketball coach)   More dining out!!!  Now home to scale down on the consumption of food an wine.

Bulldogs / Women's lacrosse team !!!!!!

FRESNO, Calif. - Despite falling to UC Davis, 15-3, on Saturday, the Fresno State women's lacrosse team played its best half of the season on Saturday in the final 30 minutes. Trailing 11-1 at halftime, the Bulldogs held the Aggies to four goals while they scored two.
"The second half was the best we have played all year," Fresno State coach Sue Behme said. "We are starting to find ourselves and that was indicative in the second half."
Allie Zachariades scored Fresno State's first goal at the 21:25 mark of the first half to cut the Davis lead to 10-1. Davis scored a little over a minute later to make the score 11-1 at the break.
UC Davis scored the first three goals of the second half and led 14-1 before Andrea Alires put a ball in the back of the net with 16:43 to play. The Bulldogs scored the final goal of the game when Aja Scheuber picked up a ground ball and scored with six minutes left in the game.
Diana Aguilar had two saves while Kohl Berry had four saves in the final 22 minutes of play.
Fresno State attempted the most shots it has taken all year in 10. Scheuber had three, Zachariades and Emily Erwin each had two.
The Bulldogs coaching staff was pleased with how the team did winning draw controls as both teams had 10. Scheuber, Jennifer Smith and MARSHAI IVERSON all did a good job of winning the draw controls.
This team of young ladies are truly doing great and learing this sport in a short period of time, especially since they are the first lacrosse team making history for Fresno, Way to go ladies and Aja, you did sooooo good, we are so proud of Aja and her team-mates.Was a very exciting game, go bulldogs.Enjoy!!!!!!!
