battle field
Thinking to have some fun one day , We chose up sides to have a black walnut fight at school. The pumphouse at one end of the school yard and the back stop at the other end, made for good forts. Both sides filled a peach box full of black walnuts,[ with the green acid filled husk still on them] Running out from behind the fort loaded with ahand full of nuts, we would throw them at who ever dared come out of the other end to fight back. The braver you were the closer you got to your chosen target. Well Marvin got too brave,and got blasted right in the eye with a fat green acid filled nut. The eye puffed up so bad with all that acid,he had to find medical aid from the teacher. That, of course, brought the war to an end, and messed up all the fun we were having.
By the way Ernie indicated to me that his first kiss behind the pump house was none other than "Mud Hen"! Maybe I should clear up how she got her name. The Deaver boys went hunting one day at Sargeti`s pond. There were no ducks so they shot a mudhen, which is a srounge mud sucking filthy bird that resembles a suck with green feet. On the way home they passed this girls house, and gave it to her telling her it was a duck. She said they had it for dinner. From that time on she was named "Mud Hen". I don`t think any one rememmbers her real name. I saw her at the bowling alley about fifteen years ago, and she hasn`t gotten any prettier. Tell me Ernie what did you really see in her tha others didn`t? Did we miss something that you want to tell us about now that time has passed? I mean she was really Ugly! Uncle Bill
