Thanks

Yes, Yes, John and Marge, that was a super party. You did good. I think this was the most family we've had together in a long time. Particularly on Christmas Eve. Grandma and Gramdpa would have been proud to see the old tradition carry on. Thanks everyone for being there and for just being family.

Thanks again J, M, and "B" and Happy New Year all.......... from:

Biera Wakley

I hope I got the spelling correct.  It came directly from the Scheuber cookbook!

For the younger Scheubers, who may not have a copy of the official Scheuber cookbook, I've included Grandma's recipe for Biera Wakley.  Perhaps this will be the year to start the baking tradition at your home!  I know Uncle Bill can't make it to everyone's house with his own delicious version!!

Grandma's Biera Wakley

3 C. Flour
2 Tsp. Sugar
2 Tsp. Salt
2 Tsp. Baking Powder
1 1/4 C. Crisco
1 C. Milk (approximately)

Combine these ingredients and mix as you would a pie crust.

15 Dried Pear Halves, cooked in a small amount of water and ground cinnamon and cloves, to taste
2 Pints Raspberry Jam
1 Pint Fig Jam
3-4 Tsp. Mincemeat
1 Tsp. Corriander, crushed
1 Tsp. Anise

Cook pears; grind and combine with remaining ingredients.

Roll out portions of "crust" in a rectangle and sparingly spread filling over the entire crust.  Carefully fold over and seal the ends with a fork and poke holes in the top with a fork, too.  Brush top with beaten egg white and water.  Bake on a cookie sheet for 20 minutes at 425 F.

The note at the bottom of the recipe reads: The recipe and spelling, "Biera Wakley" are as authentic as the author could get!

Lots of love and happy baking!
Lori

oops!

Sorry, I should have used spell check on my last post --now I see the typing errors and omitted words.  How did that spacing get there that was supposed to be in one paragraph?

RSVPing

GOS Scheuber Family (4) is in for Christmas Eve extravaganza @ JR Scheubers. We'll be there with appropriate SC gifts. Can I bring a dish? (Besides Venus of course).

Etc.

Congratulations to Lauren and her team for winning the championship!!.  So sorry that she was ill, but knowing that she was part of the reason they made it to the championship surely should make her mighty proud.

So glad to hear that Fran and Bill were able to get to Las Vegas and spend time with their grandkids.  I'm sure it was a wonderful time for all of them.  From what we hear  and the pictures we've seen they are such beautiful and precious little ones.  Last year John and I were at that Rodeo in Vegas but the honor went to some of his cowboy type salesmen   In fact one of them got married there in the excitement of it all at one of these quick marriage parlors.  After 20 years with the same lady, he finally made it legal.  Am sure  he and the VSI crew from Oregon and Fresno had a few drinks before all this took place. The Rodeo there is an exciting place as I remember well.  I hope John will see that we make it there again someday.

We are trying to get ready for the big Christmas Eve event.  With all the Christmas activities, it has been a challenge.  While in Columbia attending a Christmas play with our lodge I heard a voice over the crowd yelling."Auntie Marge."   It was Mike Chiavettia.  Making my way toward him, he proceeds to tell me, " I hugged your sister thinking it was you."  She was standing next to John, but definitely looks different than me.  Size and looks!!  Must be his glass eye!    He and Jana were there with some high school students.  We had Suzy Medford (100% Dane )with us on our trip.  She worked with Jana at the Big Yellow House.    Later at dinner I heard some interesting stories of their days at the Big Yellow House.

A few weeks ago we attended the most wonderful Christmas program we have ever seen.
Benjamin's cousin was in the cast of 200 members performing singing, dancing and acting.
It is held each year at the Memorial Auditorium in Sacramento a few blocks from the state Capitol.  It is such a celebration with cast members in colorful costumes parading up and down the aisles while other events are taking place on stage.  It is hard to keep up with all that is taking place.  John said that he shed a few tears at this spectacular event.  We came away with the spirit of Christmas in our hearts.  We heard that the producer has been selling his Christmas shows all over the nation.

Last week we took Ben out to pick a child"s name on the Soroptimist Christmas tree.  He definitely wanted a boy this year since we has a girl last year.  Ben enjoyed being in on the purchasing of clothes and toys for this 6 yr old child.  Ben suggested that we get him these soccer pajamas since his name sounded Mexican.  As Ben said, Mexican kids love soccer.  Seems like Swiss kids love soccer too.

Ben's school winter concert was Monday night.  He is one of 5 boys in the choir.  Lucky guy!   Haley and Sydney's dance program is tomorrow night so we will be heading for Rocklin.  Sunday we have our lodge Christmas dinner at Legends where the children will meet Santa.  Benjamin will be with us.  John says, " When are we going to have time to be home?"  Well, he and Ted finished our garage floors with epoxy last Fri and Saturday.  We are planning on heating the garage and fixing up a play area for the kids for Christmas Eve.
Heidi, Sandi, Sarah and all the kids were here on Saturday making cookies.  The babies were lined up on the floor  for pictures and to make comparisons.  Callie is longer and Taylor has fatter cheeks.

Well, the cookie dough is waiting to be rolled and baked and off to  93 yr old Aunt Vivian's house.  She returned my cookie plate a few weeks ago while I was visiting and requested that I fill it up again.

Looking forward to seeing many of you on Christmas Eve.  So far only the LAS Scheuber family, Ashlee's parents, Mike Chiavettia family, and John Duarte family  have RSVP'd.  Hope everyone received their invitation.  I know Maryjane and Ernie's was practically destroyed in the mail process.   See you soon.

That's My Grandkid!

Just thought I'd let the clan know the Lauren you just read about is my
grandkid.
Yeah, she is the one that plays soccer for the Blue Lightning that just won
the
championship. Sorry to hear she couldn't play in the championship game
because
she was sick but I'm sure the opposing team was glad she was out. She had a
big
part in helping her team get to the championship game and we're real proud
of her.
Yes sir, Uncle Beel, that's my GRANDKID LAUREN.

Way to go, gal!!!!!!!!!!

102 Degrees of Blue Lightning

Ok...final chapter. Thanks for the forum to boast about Lauren's soccer season.

Well, well, well. Funny thing happened on the way to Redondo Beach last night for Lauren's Championship game...15 minutes before Venus and I would arrive, a message that "Lauren has a fever, and won't be playing tonight." This, for a non-sports-aholic is a difficult concept to grasp. Ya just can't explain the severity of circumstance NOT to be able to play in the biggest game of the year. I felft soo bad for her.

We arrived at the field, Lauren wrapped in a blanket dressed in her jersey, but no cleats, no shin guards, no shorts, just cozy sweats...she was definetly out. A solumn group of girls went through their warmups, but a quiet buzz circulated as the word passed that the Blue Lightning would be short handed for the final game.

Down 2-0 through the first half...Lauren was sent home out of the cold.

Amazing isn't it, how given opportunity and circumstance, people excell? It was the quiet hard-working forward of the Blue Lightning that hadn't scored a goal all year that put up the first goal for the Lightning, late in the third. From there it was all Tatianna (she gets hungry like that)....3 more to put it away. Quite exciting. We phoned Lauren as the final seconds ticked away...she heard the celebration, I'm so happy for them all!

Geoff

PS Lauren feels better today, fever's goin' down.

Hope to see you in a couple of weeks!

Vegas Rodeo

It was great to hear about your adventure to Vegas and the National Rodeo, Auntie Fran and Uncle Bill! We watched a bit of it on ESPN last night, as I knew Bryan and family were there.

Hope they are all doing great!

LasVages Trip

We are back!  Fran and I went to Las Vegus to see Brian and his family.  They were there on thier winter vacation to see the national  final Rodeo
we were there three days and had a great time with the kids.  Teal is a big sister that takes care of little brother Garette.  He is a real charactor. He is walking real well now and thinks he is a real big shot.  He is so strong and solid as a rock. He knows what he wants and he lets you know it. We all went to the aquarium at Mandilay Bay and Teal and Garette really had fun watching the sharks and the various fish They got to touch the stingrays and see the jelly fish. Real got a book with all the fish pictures to take to school for show and tell.Tammy did her annual shopping at the three cowboy Christmas shows that had every thing cowboy that you ever want to see. Bryan was pointing all the pro cowboys that he and Tammy have rodeoed with, and what to look for as they came out of the shute. It made the show more interesting, knowing how they gain points.  They said to say hello to all and a merry Christmas!  We really had a great time, and hated to leave.  Uncle Bill

Sports Talk

Of course Bill, I shoulda known. SO when watching a "Nuts" game, and the opponent strikes out the side, does the announcer say "The Nuts are out in order!?" (I've got a million of 'em don't get me started!)

Soccer update since it's been awhile. Along the way to their second undefeated season, the Blue Lightning has experienced defeat...twice now. The first, a bizarre game that saw our coach and a few parents get booted, and the last...the final game of the Turkey Tournament. The Lightning thoruoughly romped their way through the first four games, back to back days with 2 games each, the latter in the rain at night! They had a ton of fun until Sunday. The "big girl" opponent that I've talked about before got hurt in the first minute...a sure victory, so the Lightning thought! BUT, we saw a different opponent that day. The Tigers played way above their heads and beat Lauren's team 3-1 to steal the first place medal. Lots of tears that day.

Saturday we began the league playoffs. You could say the girls got out a bit of aggression, 9-0 for game 1. Last night was the semi's...in the pouring rain again. Tatianna went wild, scoring 5, and had 3 assists...one to Lauren inside close. Lauren also hit from about 20 yards out, probably her best all 'round game. Again, not close.

Friday night is the league final....we play the team that beat us 3-1!

Will bring highlight video to Christmas eve, for the sportsminded.

Geoff

By the way, Karl blew that whole Kobe thing way out of proportion. I think he was lookin' for an out. Heck, why not play for the Spurs, it's guaranteed...right?

Yes Geoff, I Think I can Answer That.......

It is because all of the other really good team nicknames
Albuquerque (Isotopes), Arkansas (Travelers), Batavia(Muckdogs), Brevard County (Manatees), Cancun (Lobstermen), Chattanooga (Lookouts), Corpus Christi (Hooks), Greensboro (Grasshoppers), Idaho Falls (Chukars), Lansing (Lugnuts), and my personal favorite............Montgomery (Biscuits)  were already taken!

Cousin Bill

Say it isn't so...

I saw the new logo for Modesto's Baseball team.

Uh, can someone help me understand...what were they thinkin?

Re: Thanksgiving in Long Beach

Geoff,
I was touched by your Thanksgiving story and picture.  What a nice gesture to include your cousin's marine friends to have a home to go to for Thanksgiving!  We are all so thankful for those soldiers that are out there protecting our homeland. It brought back memories of my dad and uncles serving in WW2.  The army had my dad in Hawaii, two uncles in England and the marines had my Uncle Alvin in Iwo Jima.  They never wanted to talk about their experiences in the war.  It was not something they wanted to remember.

We had an enjoyable evening last night with many of the Scheuber clan as they attended the Ag. Hall of Fame dinner.  At our table was Uncle Pius, Uncle Bill, Uncle Ernie and Auntie MaryJane.  At the Duarte table were Uncle Jim, Auntie Nini, Uncle Leo and Auntie Marge, Cousin Jeff and April, and Jim's sister Marianna and Wendell. Lori and Jeff were at another table.   Uncle Ernie and Uncle Bill's art work  for the auction was greatly appreciated as the proceeds will help the future of the Ag. Museum.

Congratulations to Mike and Ashlee on their upcoming blessed event.  Everyone is exciting for you.

names of the past

Yes, It was Joe Delucci  and had intended to give him credit in the story, but neglected to do so. I also wanted to mention the fig rings he made with dried figs.He would take a key from a coffee can and straighten it out to make a needle and threaded apiece of dried tule that he soaked in water and threaded it through slot in the needle and ran it through the center of a flattened dry fig one at a time until he had a wreath of about two dozen figs. He then hung them in the celler.

OK class, we are ready to look deeper in to the land of little things. The nexet chapter will be on the living earth. If anyone has any other interest , please notify me and I will reserch my brain and see if I can come up with a meaningful class that everyone can learn from. This will be a future project for my scientific mind. It may contain a bit of fiction ,but I promise to make it stimulating to your interests   in any future class that we might want to pursue.  In trying to teach, one has to inter mingle some fiction to keep thier students awake. That of coarse didn`t work with me when I was in school , because I knew what they were trying to do, so I just slept through the whole thing, Which I give credit for me not becoming a liberal.    Uncle Bill
