More Fairview

Fran, you warned us that Bill was itching to make his comments regarding Fairview
School.  I was waiting for his chapter of the "Grapes of Wrath"  and to my surprise he
did a very decent job, allthough I can't agree with him 100%.  No one expected me to, did they?

First Bill, some of your recognition of people is not quite correct.  You are correct, the Lee twins
are easy to recognize.  And yes, Sydney Mae Lee is the little gal right behind you in the picture.
However, there is no Shirley Ann Lee in this picture.  She was Ernie's vintage, not in schooll yet,
and still in diapers when this picture was taken.  Delmar Matheson is not next to me, but is the young
man with the big smile sitting to your left.  And to the left of Delmar is Jim Deaver.  Jim was in my class
and could not be one of those big guys in the back row.  The Howard family, Winford, Winston, LaVida,
and LaVeda came a year or two later.

Yeah, the srap iron drive, the cave, and the black walnut fights, bring back memories.  Another thing that
might be fun to remember was the Presto family accross the street from the school.  This may be hard to believe,
but just three weeks ago Steve Collins and I went to Creekside golf course for a leasure round of golf.  When there
are only two players they usually will match you up with two others to make a foursome.  Well this happend to us,
we were matched with another couple of guys,  As I talked to one of these guys I asked him if he was originally
from this area.  His comment was, " I grew up out in the country.  You probably wouldn't be familiar with the area.
My grandparents had a farm accross the road from Fairview School."  I said, "Presto?"  He said, "you know the
Presto family?"  I said, "I went to Fairview School for eight years and can remember kicking the soccer ball accross
the road so we could steal oranges from the Presto orange trees."   His comment was, "you were one of those kids
that would drive my grandma crazy."  We had a good laugh...........................and I also reminded him that on the way
home from school we would stop and fill our lunch boxes with chestnuts from the two big trees on the east side of the
Presto property.  It's a small world.........................

Yes, anxious to see more pictures.........................bring them on.

Leo

FAIRVIEW SCHOOL CONTINUED

Fairview school photo 1940-41

All rights to my way of spelling and punctuation are protected.  any changes can be done at your own risk.
This photo has stirred up some memories This photo was pre Grapes of wrath.
after detailed scrutiny , I came up with afew names and nick names. Of course we know that Leo was the cute one . I amthe one with the big ears  and Pius at  the right end front row with the frown on his face looks like he just lost two marbles in a game of fish. Must have made a bad lag from the line. Some kid with asteely for a shooter .wiped him out. I was able to pick out  Louis and  Leslie Lee and thier sisters Shirley and Sndy Mae. Sam Romano "Pete", and his sister Rose.Martha and Helen Hernandes also had asister named Rose ,but she was older.I couldn't find  Howard Deaver     Bob, JIm,and older brother Blake , in the top row.  I think the tall guy ,top row, is Joe Clovis. Herr Von Golly Dang ,Floyd and his brother jack . That may be Howard next to them on the toprow right end.I spotted Rose the squaw, the indian girl tht lived at Keparts small house. That may be Mud Hen in the middle row, the small one, Of course we couldn't miss Earl Miller and his brother Marvin.  Earl was a character , he came to school year round bare footed an d loved to slide on the ice, on the mud puddles.I am unsure which one of the girls is Deloris Quistini. We can,t forget James Abernathy, also known.  Pendix   Every time there was a test his side would hurt, so he would tell the teacher he had a   Pendix attack.    The guy next to the cute one must be Delmar The Jappanes kid on the front row is Shigarie , One of thesmall kids in the front row is the kid that was being raised by his grand parentsRutheford.,who lived o Crowslanding road.I don't remember his name. Another one I am not sure of is next to the tall guy top row might be Bob Rudell.
That is the best I could come up with for this picture, but I.d like to see the next picture including our new friends from the Gapes of Wrath. There are some great names in the group , like Bruford , Bartholume, Tuffy Gerldine Bertha , Okie whitmire ,Larr, Richar Spaford. [ the guy with the crooked limb bass   fiddle.  and of course all the cowboys and indians that shot one another from the hiles in the old out house behind the shed. And what about the guys that dug a cave behind the back stop. and the green, blacck walnut fights we ha until Marvin got hit in the eye. The great scrap iron drive we had for the war effert.,          which brought about the alarm clock era, some great stories there .Then came mrs. Barnes, at all of five ft. Much too small for some of the big Okies that were 16 years old in the sixth grade. She lasted half fo a year. Then came Mr. Hardesty, the ex cop. some other names just came to mind. Winsten and Winford, LaVida and LaVeda. Some one needs to find that picture!   I hope that awackend some memories.    uncle Bill

Idol / Tuesday 5-12-09 !!!!!

Hi Geoff, What did you think of Idol on Tuesday evening ?????
This is what I am thinking---- 1.these young men are the best (AM IDOL) has had close to the big finale in a long time. 2.I got the feeling that Simon was speaking as if Adam already was the winner.(didn't like this).!!!!!!!
They were great, but I think Kris Allen will be leaveing and we have Danny & Adam.
Danny is my guy so I will stay with him.
Take care------ Auntie Fran
ps, check this out DUDE, I will miss Randy Jackson he keeps me laughing.

Fairview School

Wow!  Fairview School...............
Can you believe that it has been nearly 70 years since that picture was taken.
For those of you that are not aware..............that picture is of the entire student
body of the school.  (about 45 students).  Today Fairview Elementary School is
the largest elementary school in the Modesto City School District.  In those days
the school was two rooms with an auditorium in the middle.  The "Little Room"
was for the grades of 1 to 4 and the "Big Room" was grades 5 to 8.  Four rows in
each room, a row for each grade.  Today nearly 90 percent of the students are
learning English.  Nearly 70 years ago there were three little Swiss boys trying to
learn the English language with no bilingual education programs to assist.  They just
dumped you in class and hoped you survived.  I think we did.

Shortly after this picture was taken, World War II broke out and I can remember some
of my Japanese classmate crying because they knew that they would not be returning to
school on the next Monday.  They and their families were being sent off to Concentration
Camps for the Japanese.  The Turlock Fairgrounds was one of those sites.

Lori, your dad Ernie is not in the picture.  This was before his time in school.  He probably
was still in diapers at the time.  Anita and John were yet to follow even later.

Fairview was a 1st to 8th grade school through June of 1947.  I was in the last eighth grade
graduating class at Fairview.  After my class, I believe 7th and 8th graders were sent off to
Jr. High.  I think Walter Wright but I can't be sure.

Speaking of the last eighth grade to graduate from Fairview.  For some reason or another
the graduating ceremony was to have an arch way for decoration and the call went out for an arch.
Just happens that brother Bill taking Ag Mechanics in high school had built a rose arbor that stood
out on the west side of the house at the ranch.  I volunteered the arch and asked Dad if he would
deliver it to the school.  His comment............."I don't have time, you put it on the pickup and take it to
school."  The next morning I drove the Model A with the arbor to school.  Can you imagine a parent,
today, allowing an eighth grader to drive a car to school?  Oh well, it was nice to be King of the Campus
for one day.

Olemarge, thanks for finding the picture.  Brings back many fond memories.  And by the way, Mae Hensley
Jr. High in Ceres is named for our Fairview principal in the picture, Mae Hensley, a very special lady.

Dad, Brother, Uncle, In-law,

Leo

I Think I Found Two?

What a great picture!  If I’m right, I see Uncle Leo’s cute smile on the bottom row and to the right of him is my dad, Uncle Ernie.  I assume I’m looking for Uncle Bill as the third Scheuber, but I just can’t see who he might be.  Perhaps when I enlarged the photo, he was cut off?

Any clues?

Lots of love,

Lori
