Beely, I don't think sooooooo.......
Yeah Beely, you're right there was a cave. But.......not behind the backstop. Closer to first base. No way were you or anyone else going to dig a cave behind the backstop with that big tree nearly covering it. Way too many roots.. If the entrance was on the Presto property the tunnel would have to go under Whitmore Road. Not likely. The peach orchard to the east of the school was not owned by the Prestos. The Prestos were on the south side of Whitmore and had that big orange tree next to their driveway just across the street from the backstop. Many soccer balls were purposely kicked across the street so we had to go after it and pick up a few oranges at the same time. Maybe it was a different time, but my recollection of the smoke episode in the cave was from cooking frog legs that had been caught down at the canal by someone on there way to school. Also, I thought you might mention that your brother that introduced himself to Mudhen behind the pump house may have invited her to see the cave. But you didn't.
Yeah Geoff, it's a wonder that any of us made it through school.
