pumpkin

It was a rather clear and bright late fall day about this time of year, when Lavita or Lavata was walking home from school with a big smile that made her face glow with happiness. She had been thr recipiant of the left over Halloween pumpkin that was festivlly displayed in the class room. It was a friday afternoon and it was aproching time to milk the cows. She was taking a short cut through our yard on the way to her house, which was by Ray Deans house over by the cement ditch. As she walked through the yard , dad asked her what she was going to do with the pumpkin. With a some what southern drawl she replied, "I am gonna half it in two and make a puddin and a pi"
Don`t ask me why I remembered that but it has stuck with me for all these years and when every year at pumpkin time ,I think of ,It. Must be bringing me  back to my youthful years when things were simple and I was even simpler.
This is a good time of year to stuff a barley sack with hay and take it down to Crowslanding Rd., by where the welfare building is now. At that time there were a few clumps of Eucaliptis saplings whera large tree ha been cut down and all the shoots  grew up. This made for a great place to hide.  We put the sack of hay next to the road and sprinkeld some rolled barley arund it to make it look like it fell off a truck.  We had a string tied to the sack and covered it with dirt and ran it back to the bushes. When some one would come by  they would stop to pick up this sack of  rolled barley , we would pull the string and embaress the person that thought they had scored a free sack of feed.   Some laught an some got p.o ed. One time two little old ladies stopped and when we pulled the string, they screamed" ,It`s alive, there must be some cats in there". Another time, Bill Coling came by on his motor cycle . He was on to our tricks so when he came by on the way back he rode by and kicked the sack. No doubt he had pulled this trick a few times himself.  One time "Okie Whitmire tried this trick with a neww shinning hammer with a leather hand. He hide behind the hedge by his house. When Chris Jorgensen stopped to pick up the hammer and Okie pulled the stringChris was chasing the hammer and the strins got hooked up in the hedge, so chris grabbed the hammer and broke the string and left with the hammer.    Uncle Bill
