More Congratulations to Anne

Congratulations Anne on your scholorship!
from great Uncle John and great Auntie Marge.

I must admit, I did not know what the Tom Mellis award was all about.  Had to google to find out.  This is what I found and was quite surprised for I should have known.  "One of the founders of the SOS club. This is what I found on google.

In 1957, eight men, led by Tom Mellis, banded together with the idea of forming a men's sport club to aid the California Relays, which was experiencing some financial difficulty. As a start, each of the men dropped $10 in the treasury of the club. This rescue team consisted of our Club's "Original Eight" including Tom Mellis, Tom Moore, Dick Willey, Stan Pavko, Hal Spicer, Henry Zipser, Frank Salas and Floyd Benson. These eight developed a membership expansion plan that each one was to bring one friend to the next meeting, those 16 were to do the same for the next, continuing on a progressive basis. It worked, and by October, 1957, there were 132 names on the roster, an outstanding jump toward their goal of a membership which they were going to limit at 500 members.

In the interim, the relays situation had brightened and assistance was no longer necessary. The men who had formed the new group became the Sportsmen of Stanislaus and turned their energies toward the establishment of a men's athletic club.
Modestans refer to it as The SOS Club!
