Relay for Life

May 15, 2010    Johansen High School
Another year is here and still no cure for cancer.  Help fight for the cause!  Many thanks to Sarah who continues to put in many hours of planning  at local meetings for our team and the event at JHS.    Congratulations to Sandi who has raised $615.00 so far.  We are looking forward to seeing our shirts that are being designed by Erin this year.  Come one, come all to enjoy a get together with family and friends while supporting this annual event.

Ben and Eli

Ben recently participated in a Kyoto exchange program at Johansen High.  Students from Kyoto Japan were here 2 1/2 weeks to further their studies in English, to learn about American Culture and to make new friends.  Ben will be going to Kyoto for 1 1/2 weeks beginning at Spring Break to learn about their culture, make new friends and visit with the Kyoto students that were here in Modesto.

First day of Spring / 3-20-10 !!!!!

The Yolk's on You!

Has anyone ever told you that you can balance a raw egg on end on the first day of spring?  They think that somehow the pull of gravity is more equal on this day because the sun is more directly overhead. There is no scientific support for this.  The egg legend apparently got its start in 1945 when a reporter for Life Magazine wrote a story about a Chinese ritual in which people stood eggs on end on the first day of spring.  But the Chinese recognized the first day of spring in early February, or about six weeks before the spring equinox!  Later, in 1983, one hundred New Yorkers got together on March 20 to balance eggs, and an article about the event appeared in the New Yorker magazine. A year later, five thousand New Yorkers repeated the tradition on the first day of spring, and the egg legend grew.

The truth is that if you can get a raw egg to balance upright on the spring equinox, you can get it to balance any other day of the year. The pull of gravity or the position of the sun in the sky has nothing to do with it.  So don't spread this unscientific rumor, or you'll end up with egg on your face------ ENJOY.

Fabulous Florida

John and I got back home from Florida and Kansas a few days ago.  Had a great time staying with friends ( snowbirds from Indiana) for 5 days at their winter rental, a lovely home on one of the waterways.  Weather not the typical warm weather to be expected this time of year, but were able to walk the beach in spite of the chilly wind blowing in our face.  So enjoyed the visiting, good food, and relaxation.  Then it was on to Kansas City for a two day Durvet Co. meeting.  Always glad to get back home.

VIKING CHARACTER AWARD

Congratulations Ben for you Character Viking Award at Johansen High School!  Hope you don't mind that Grandma puts these words spoken by your science teacher on this website:

This young man embodies the best of the best, that rare combination of personal traits I've rarely seen in my 26 years as a teacher.

Ben stands out from all the other students I have in that he is so many terrific traits that I can't list them all here.  The most notable, however, are his:  active listening skills, academic excellence, sincerity, interpersonal skills, honesty and integrity: the acid test of a person is if they do the right thing when no one is looking, and he does,  resistence to negative peer pressure- one of the hardest things to do.

I thank Ben's family for raising such a great person ( can you send more our way please?) It is clear that the parents behind the scene are a critical role in a person's upbringing, and it shows in Ben,

And finally, I thank Ben for being who he is someone who is an outstanding student and person.  As I step away from the classroom for the last time on June 3, it is comforting to know we've got people like Ben coming up in the world.  We need you.  Congratulations Ben!

Get Well soon Teal!   from Great Uncle John & Great Auntie Marge
